Penguins Sign Goalie To PTO For AHL Depth

by admin

As the Pittsburgh Penguins navigate a rocky start to the 2024-25 season, one of the trending topics surrounding the club is goaltending. However, it’s not the only level of the organization that’s had its fair of goalie storylines.

On Monday, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins signed netminder Luke Richardson to a professional try-out (PTO), and he’ll report to the AHL after spending the past month on the roster of the Wheeling Nailers in the ECHL.

In September, the Penguins signed the 25-year-old native of Barrie, ON, to a PTO, but he didn’t make the club out of camp.

Before Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s next game against the Bridgeport Islanders on Wednesday, the baby Penguins will have veteran NHLer Tristan Jarry, Filip Larsson, and possibly Richardson as a goalie platoon.

Recently, the AHL club announced that they demoted one of the organization’s top goalie prospects, Sergei Murashov, down to Wheeling. In one appearance, his first in North America, the young Russian netminder picked up a win while surrendering just one goal.

Interestingly, it’s been a wild season for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. They are currently without their top goalie from last season, Joel Blomqvist, who has served routinely as Pittsburgh’s backup or starter through the first ten games.

Meanwhile, Alex Nedeljkovic recently came down for a conditioning stint and picked up a win, while Jarry is currently serving as the team’s top starter and has a win in his first game.

Larsson, who saw some action in the NHL pre-season, is the only goalie on the AHL roster to skate more than one game but is 1-2-0 with a .918 SV% and 2.74 GAA.

Because of inconsistency at the NHL level, the Penguins goalie carousel continues to spin at all levels of the organization, and it’s anybody’s guess on who’s getting the start on any given night.
