The Peterborough Petes have teamed up with Diabetes Canada and Tandem Diabetes Care as they gear up to host their Diabetes Awareness game on Thursday night against the Sudbury Wolves.
The night is a personal initiative for Petes starting goaltender Michael Simpson, who lives with Type-1 diabetes. Diagnosed with diabetes when he was just three years-old, Simpson continues to spread awareness about the disease. A native of London, Ont., Simpson grew up going to London Knights games, looking up to Max Domi who is also a competitive hockey player with type 1.
Going into his fourth year with the Petes, the netminder wanted to give back to the community just like Domi. Simpson has started a personal initiative to help raise money for kids in the Peterborough community to have the opportunity to go to D-camp.
The game will have plenty of initiatives to support the cause, including chuck-a-puck and a game-worn Simpson jersey auction.
