The Sharks acquired goalie Kaapo Kähkönen ahead of the NHL trade deadline in March and they liked what they saw over the final two months of the 2021-22 season as they announced Monday that they re-signed him to a two-year contract.

“Kaapo has shown potential to be a number one goaltender in the NHL, and impressed us when he joined our team in the last part of the season,” first-year general manager Mike Grier said in a statement released by the Sharks. “We are excited to have him with us.”

NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman reported that Kähkönen’s new deal has an average annual value/salary cap hit of $2.75 million. Kähkönen will earn $2.6 million in the first year of the contract and $2.9 million in the second year, The Mercury News’ Curtis Pashelka reported, citing sources.

The 25-year-old Finland native played in 11 games after coming to San Jose in the trade with the Minnesota Wild, posting a .916 Save Percentage and 2.86 Goals Against Average during that span. Prior to the trade, Kähkönen appeared in 25 games for the Wild.
