The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s hockey program has announced that Saginaw Spirit forward Nick Wong has committed for the 2022-23 season.

Drafted in the second round (38th overall) by the Oshawa Generals in the 2017 OHL Priority Selection, the Erin, Ont. native played four seasons in the OHL, splitting his time between the Oshawa Generals, Kingston Frontenacs and the Saginaw Spirit. Wong recorded 122 points scoring 68 goals and 54 assists (68-54-122) in 255 games over his OHL tenure. The OHL did not play any games in 2020-21 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Nick’s a smooth skater and has strong offensive abilities,” said Varsity Blues head coach Ryan Medel. “His release and his finish around the net was evident during a strong overage season.”

“He will also bring versatility to our group as he can play the middle or the wing. It was evident in our early conversations with Nick that his values as an athlete and as a student aligned well with our program.”

This past season, Wong put forth a career season registering 39 points (24 goals and 15 assists) while playing with Saginaw. He was also an assistant captain during his final campaign.

In 2017, Wong was a member of Team Canada Red, who went on to win a silver medal at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. During the tournament, Wong posted three goals and three assists in six games.

“I chose the University of Toronto because it best fits my goals to further my hockey career while achieving a great education,” said Wong. “The athletics and schooling are first class and I am looking forward to continue improving on the ice and in the classroom.”

Wong will study within U of T’s prestigious Rotman Commerce program starting this fall.
