Sheffield Steelers will participate in the Continental Cup next season, representing the Elite League, the IIHF have announced.

Aaron Fox’s men were meant to take part in the competition in 2020/21, their reward for winning the Challenge Cup, but the tournament was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

But now they get the chance to go again and will head to Denmark in November in the third round where they’ll face hosts Aalborg Pirates, HK Gomel of Belarus and a qualifier from the previous round.

If they qualify, they’ll go on to the final group, which will take place in January at a venue yet to be confirmed.

While the 2020/21 edition was cancelled, the previous two tournament saw Elite League clubs end their campaigns as runners-up with Nottingham Panthers coming behind SønderjyskE, while Belfast Giants were edged out on home ice by Belarus side Yunost Minsk.

Nottingham Panthers won the Continental Cup in 2017.
