The Los Angeles Kings defeated the Vegas Golden Knights 3-2 in their second pre-season game of the 2024-25 season.

The Kings jumped out to a 2-0 lead with goals 20 seconds apart for Alex Laferriere and Tanner Jeannot. They dominated the first period but the Golden Knights were able to level it out for the next 40 minutes. Ilya Samsonov played all 60 minutes and made 27 saves on 30 shots.
Tanner Laczynski Stands Out
The Golden Knights signed Laczynski to a two-year, two-way deal on July 1st and he’ll likely spend most of the season with the Henderson Silver Knights in the AHL. For players in Laczynski’s situation, pre-season is a great opportunity to show the team they deserve a shot in the NHL at some point. Against the Kings, he did just that recording a goal, an assist and three shots on goal in just 14:02 of time on ice.
The eye test was enough for the 27-year-old to get his flowers but the analytics proved it further. He was the Golden Knights’ best player and has helped his case to be one of the first players called up from the Silver Knights in case of injuries.
Zach Aston-Reese Shows Valuable Fourth-Line Qualities
Aston-Reese is now 30 years old and after five consecutive seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins, he’s become a journeyman fighting to stay in the lineup. His game suits what the Golden Knights are looking for on the fourth line and he showed his value against the Kings. He’s responsible defensively, aggressive on the forecheck and can chip in offensively when need be as he did on Noah Hanifin’s goal. He’s a great penalty killer willing to lay his body on the line to block shots and throw hits.
Tomas Hertl Looked Like Himself Again
Hertl skated alongside three players he’s never shared the ice with but looked like his usual creative and playmaking self. His brief stint with the Golden Knights last year had many people worrying but his game against the Kings was a gentle reminder of the player he is. Recovering from knee surgery takes time and Hertl said he used the offseason to do so.
The Golden Knights will host Utah HC on Friday for their third pre-season game of the year.
