STAYING FOCUSED: The one thing Red Wings have learned that has led to their late-season surge
Game notes: It’s coming up on 15 years since the Red Wings held off a 20-year old Sidney Crosby and the Penguins to win the Stanley Cup in June 2008. (Was there a rematch in the Cup finals the next season? Uhhh … we don’t remember.) Now, the Wings are a game away from doing something against Crosby they’ve done just once in his 18 seasons. Sid the Kid-turned-Elder has been held without a point in his two previous games against the Wings; the now-35-year-old hasn’t gone pointless for a season since the 2006-07 season (when he played in just one game against Detroit, anyway). Crosby has 31 career games against the Wings, with at least one point in 22 of them, for a total of 14 goals and 21 assists (and a feisty 20 penalty minutes) over that span. (His most successful season against the Wings, by the way, was 2021-22, in which he had two goals and five assists in three games.)
The Wings’ two games against the Pens this season have been two of their more successful on offense. The first, on Dec. 28 in Pittsburgh, featured a frantic comeback in the second and third periods after the Wings fell behind 4-0 in the first. Five different Wings scored in that one, capped by Jake Walman’s snipe — and subsequent “Griddy” celebration — midway through overtime. Three months later, on March 28 at LCA, it was the Wings’ turn to suffer a brutal collapse, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first, then giving three goals back I the second. But David Perron stepped up in the third with a hat trick (and no empty-netters) as the Wings prevailed, 7-4.
After this one, the Wings have just three games remaining, and just one at LCA, with the Central Division-contending Dallas Stars (and former Red Wing Luke Glendening) visiting on Monday night. The Wings then finish on the road with games in Carolina on Tuesday and in Tampa on Thursday. The Penguins, meanwhile, will have just two left: vs. Chicago at home Tuesday and at Columbus on Thursday.
