Another promising piece of Canada’s star power up front lies in Peterborough Petes forward Mason McTavish. In good company last season alongside Nick Robertson and Akil Thomas, the Carp, Ont. native put up an impressive rookie performance that ultimately landed him an âAâ ranking alongside three other OHL skaters on NHL Central Scoutingâs 2021 âPlayers to Watchâ list.
IMPRESSING WITH THE PETES
Drafted fifth overall by the Petes at the 2019 OHL Priority Selection, Mason McTavish turned heads over the course of his opening OHL season with a 42-point production, placing him second in scoring among League rookies. His 29 goals also placed him third among his teammates and are the most by a Petes rookie since Matt Puempel (33) in 2009-10.
TAKING THINGS OVERSEAS
Awaiting news on the 2020-21 OHL season, the Swiss-born 18-year-old forward took his game to EHC Olten of the Swiss League, Switzerlandâs second tier pro league, where he collected 11 points (9-2â11) over 13 appearances.
FOLLOWING IN FATHER DALEâS FOOTSTEPS
McTavishâs ties to the Petes run beyond his rookie season. Father Dale McTavish played four seasons with the Petes spanning 1989-93 before a stint at St. Francis Xavier University, a shot with the Calgary Flames and AHL affiliate Saint John Flames, and a lengthy pro career in Finland and Switzerland. Dale eventually became head coach and owner of the CCHLâs Pembroke Lumber Kings, the organization where McTavish would eventually flourish with 47 goals and 32 assists during his 2018-19 minor midget campaign.
McTavish and 12 other OHL players will hit the ice in Plano and Frisco, Texas on April 27th when Canada opens its tournament schedule against Sweden.
