The University of New Brunswick REDS men’s hockey program were crowned University Cup champions in Charlottetown, PEI on Sunday night, with 16 OHL graduates contributing to the effort.

Earning their ninth national title, the REDS overpowered the Alberta Golden Bears in the final frame and defeated their opponent 3-0 to claim the championship banner at the 2023 U SPORTS national tournament.

Taking home Player of the Game honours, London Knights graduate Cody Morgan opened the scoring at the 13:17 mark in the second period when he took the loose puck from the neutral zone and went in alone to make it 1-0.

UNB came out of the second intermission strong as former Soo Greyhounds forward Cole MacKay found the back of the net off a pass from Hamilton Bulldogs alumnus Isaac Nurse to extend UNB’s lead. Ottawa 67’s graduate Austen Keating sealed the victory less than 90 seconds later, slipping one in to make it 3-0. Former Saginaw Spirit forward Camaryn Baber also contributed a pair of assists in the win.

UNB previously won national championships in 2019, 2017, 2016, 2013, 2011, 2009, 2007 and 1998.
