Ovechkin named NHL’s First Star of the Week after goal No. 802 originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington
For the third consecutive week, a Washington Capital has been tabbed as the NHL’s First Star of the Week. For the second consecutive time, that star is Alex Ovechkin.
Colorado Avalanche netminder Alexandar Georgiev and Vancouver Canucks forward Elias Pettersson joined Ovechkin as the second and third stars of the week, respectively. Ovechkin was the league’s First Star of the Week last week after he scored his 800th career goal vs. Chicago; Caps’ goalie Charlie Lindgren was named First Star the week prior.
The Great 8 was given the honor after scoring twice in Washington’s 4-1 win over Winnipeg on Friday, as he surpassed Gordie Howe for the second-most goals in NHL history with his 802nd career strike.

The Capitals also enjoyed weeklong success during Ovechkin’s surge. They posted a perfect 3-0-0 record in three games as Ovi put up two goals and four assists during the span. Washington has won nine of their last ten games thanks in part to Ovechkin, stellar defense and goaltending, and increased health throughout the roster.
“Ovechkin (22-19—41 in 36 GP), who leads all Capitals skaters and ranks seventh in the NHL with 22 goals in 2022-23, is on pace for his 10th career 50-goal season and now sits 93 tallies shy of breaking Wayne Gretzky’s record for the most goals in NHL history,” read the league press release.
Washington is on a roll as calendar year 2022 comes to a close. Their next test will be at Madison Square Garden as they face the Rangers on Tuesday. They’ll also take on the Senators and Canadiens at home before the year is out.
