UTICA, N.Y. – Mckenzie Schmidt ’25 netted a pair of goals to guide the Elmira College women’s ice hockey program to a 4-2 victory against Wilkes University on Friday night at the Utica University Kickoff Tournament. Elmira will face Utica in the championship game following the Pioneers’ 1-0 victory against Suffolk University.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Both sides skated to a scoreless draw through the opening 20 minutes of action, with the Soaring Eagles holding an 11-5 advantage in shots on goal.
- The Colonels opened the scoring just over six minutes into the second period as Haylee Bouchard found the back of the net to give Wilkes a 1-0 advantage.
- Elmira answered late in the second period as McKenzie Schmidt ’25 beat the Wilkes goalkeeper at 17:36 to knot the score 1-1. Sabrina Shvartsman ’25 tallied the helper on Schmidt’s first goal of the season for the Purple & Gold.
- The third period would see four combined goals as Savannah Barber ’28 netted her first career goal for the Soaring Eagles at the 6:37 mark to make it 2-1. Alayna Toole ’26 and Sarah Waszkielewicz ’26 assisted on Barber’s power-play goal.
- Wilkes rallied to knot the score 2-2 at the 14:20 mark before Sophie Compeau ’25 netted a goal at the 18:07 mark to give Elmira a 3-2 advantage. Anna Lugge ’27 and Sophie Gregory ’26 were credited with the helpers on the eventual game-winning goal.
- Schmidt closed the scoring with a short-handed empty-net goal at 19:47 to secure the 4-2 victory for the Purple & Gold.
- Leonie-Louise Kuehberger ’25 stopped 10 of 12 shots faced to improve to 1-0 on the season between the pipes for the Soaring Eagles. Elmira finished the contest with a 31-12 advantage in shots on goal while finishing 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.
