Barrie, ON – The Barrie Colts have signed prospect Beau Jelsma to a Standard Player Agreement.

Jelsma, a 5-foot-10, 165 lb. forward from Brownsville, Ont. was selected by the Barrie Colts in the third round, 55th overall of the 2020 OHL Priority Selection.

“I am very excited to make the next step in my hockey career,” said Jelsma in a statement. “I want to thank my parents but also my whole family for helping me to get to where I am today.”

Jelsma was set to play for the Stratford Warriors of the GOJHL for the 2020-21 season but it was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

He split time with the Buffalo Jr. Sabres 15U AAA squad and Brantford 99ers U16 AAA club for the 2019-20 season. The 17-year-old posted 44 points (27g-17a) and 64 penalty minutes. Furthermore, he had a stellar playoff run in which he totalled 21 points (11g-10a) in just 12 games for the Brantford 99ers U16 AAA club.

“The OHL has always been a dream of mine to play in ever since I was little,” Jelsma added. “It’s going to be such an honour to make it come true with the team and atmosphere of the Barrie Colts. I can’t wait to suit up in the navy and gold.”

Colts Assistant General Manager Rob Stewart is impressed with the level of commitment Jelsma has demonstrated and is looking forward to what he can bring to the Colts lineup.

“Beau has remained extremely committed to improving his game over what has been a challenging year for all players,” said Stewart. “He brings a high compete level with some good speed and skill that will be a great addition to our group moving forward.”
