Milton’s Sean Keohane selected by Buffalo Sabres in sixth round of NHL Draft

Sean Keohane of Milton was one of 49 Americans selected in the two-day NHL Draft that concluded Thursday at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee.

Keohane, a 6-4 defenseman, was a sixth-round pick (No. 173 overall) by the Buffalo Sabres.

Keohane, 18, was ranked 159th by NHL Central Scouting among North American skaters and 209th by Draft Prospects Hockey.

Keohane played prep hockey at Dexter Southfield School in Brookline, totaling 16 points (4 goals, 12 assists) in 32 games this past season. He had a 4-19–23 scoring line over 24 games in 2021-22. Keohane also played for the Cape Cod Whalers 18U AAA team in 2022-23, netting a goal and 5 assists in 14 games. He’s also logged time with the South Shore Kings club team.

Dexter Southfield defenseman Sean Keohane, of Milton, was a sixth-round pick of the Buffalo Sabres in the NHL Draft. Keohane, a Harvard commit, is scheduled to play in the USHL next season.

This is how the EliteProspects 2023 Draft Guide describes Keohane’s game: “At 6-foot-4, the Milton-born defender towers over his competition. What makes Keohane particularly interesting is how he blends his skating with his frame. A capable mover who quickly gets in motion on the rush, Keohane also flashes nuanced defensive skating, allowing him to push an absurd amount of aggression defending the rush. He’s physical, jumping off the net front to punish attackers on the end boards and tries to clog lanes with anticipation-based reads, pushing nastiness after the whistle.”

Keohane plans to play at Harvard for the 2024-25 season. He will spend the 2023-24 campaign in the United States Hockey League with the Tri-City Storm of Kearney, Nebraska.
