On Wednesday night, during a game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Detroit Red Wings, fans noticed that defenseman Jeff Petry was wearing the wrong jersey—or should we say the wrong brand?
There was nothing wrong with the spelling of Petry’s name, which happens sometimes in the world’s highest professional league. Instead, this jersey mishap is that the former Montreal Canadiens defender was wearing an Adidas-branded jersey, despite the NHL’s partnership with Fanatics.
This is a new category: The Previous Manufacturer Foul.
Someone in Detroit is getting a harshly worded email from Fanatics today, let me tell you … https://t.co/pk5Xrku6Lf

Once someone posted it on X, formerly known as Twitter, other NHL media accounts picked up the story and provided fans with several screenshots of the Adidas jersey.
Even though this moment occurred three nights ago, there’s still no explanation about why Petry wore a different sweater than his teammates, who rallied for a 3-2 overtime victory at PPG Paints Arena.
Adidas became the NHL’s official jersey partner in 2015, and both sides mutually agreed to part ways after the 2023-24 campaign, when Fanatics signed a ten-year deal to produce sweaters. As most teams approach 20 games of the 2024-25 season, seeing such a jersey mishap is rather unusual.
