Just like that, training camp is underway as we inch closer and closer to puck drop on the 2023-24 NHL regular season.
And with that, specifically for the Maple Leafs, comes renewed optimism. For obvious reasons, there was a buzz, an excitement surrounding the team as they hit the ice this past week. It feels like Christmas, which is weird, considering how things ended last season.
With go-time just around the corner, Jay Rosehill and I have been working on our show cardio. After a summer of doing who knows what, it’s our training camp, too. At any rate, we got together for nearly 50 minutes to discuss the big topics so far early in camp. I knew we would be talking about William Nylander, but not in this light. In case you missed it, the Leafs are committed to trying him up the middle —at least for the immediate future. It goes without saying but that will one very fascinating storyline to document over the next few weeks.
Speaking of which, aided by Brad Treliving’s desire to try Nylander at centre, Sheldon Keefe rolled out some new-look lines to begin camp. Obviously, we dove into that a bit, too. If there’s one thing we know about Keefe, it’s that he loves the blender, so there’s no point putting much stock into what we see right now.
Anyway, indisputably, the highlight of the show was spending nearly 25 minutes chatting with Paul Bissonette. Yes, we touched on the Mike Babcock saga, but we talked about other things too. We got into his media career, how it almost ended before it started, and of course, we touched on his love of the Maple Leafs. He was fantastic. Must-listen!
Meantime, just like the Leafs, Jay Rosehill and I are deep into preparation for season No. 2 of Leafs Morning Take.
