Connor McDavid is such a freak.
On Thursday night against the Nashville Predators, the Newmarket native became the 99th player in NHL history to hit the 1000-point plateau.
That’s so fitting, seriously. Personally, I know it’s a pipe dream, but I’m still holding out hope that McDavid become a Leaf one day.
At any rate, that’s where the conversation started on the Friday edition of Leafs Morning Take. Fresh off that OT win against Luke Schenn’s Predators, McDavid and the Oilers will be in town on Saturday to tangle with Toronto. Indisputably, he must always have that game circled on his calendar.

Courtesy of Prime Video, we discussed the latest from Maple Leafs practice after they had an ‘off’ day on Thursday. Once again, there was no Auston Matthews to be found. He hasn’t practiced since Sunday and will not play against Edmonton. That’s not good to hear, but ultimately, it’s all about the playoffs for this team, so I won’t get all worked up about this. Also, Toronto’s 4-1-0 without Matthews, so there’s that, too. They need to bore Edmonton to death on Saturday night.
Meantime, we were fortunate enough to be joined by one of the newest members of the Hockey Hall of Fame (BUILDER) and the current EVP and Director of Hockey Operations for the NHL, Colin Campbell. Naturally, the brunt conversation stemmed around all the video reviews on Wednesday night in Washington. All in all, it was good to get a first-hand account of what the league was thinking during those reviews.
Lastly, we played another edition of TAKE IT OR LEAF IT. This week, we debated whether at least three of the Core Four will end up being inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame one day, if Auston Matthews will finish with more career goals than both Alex Ovechkin and Wayne Gretzky, and if Matthew Knies will be the captain of a NHL team over the course of his career.
That will do it for another week. Talk on Monday at 11 AM ET as we recap Leafs/Oilers plus look ahead to Toronto’s quiet two-game week.
