Firebirds’ Kressler returns from Maple Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Tuesday that they’ve returned forward Braeden Kressler to the Flint Firebirds for his overage season in the Ontario Hockey League.

The 20-year-old from Kitchener, Ont. signed a three-year entry-level NHL contract with the Leafs back on October 2, 2021 and returns for his fourth season in the OHL, having collected 86 points (39-47–86) over 121 regular season games. Kressler, who was Flint’s second round pick back in 2019, has battled injuries over the course of his time in the OHL, playing 47 games in 2022-23, 28 in 2021-22 and 46 in 2019-20.

Kressler’s return gives the Firebirds a needed presence down the middle following the graduation of 100-point scorer Amadeus Lombardi this past offseason. Kressler recorded 52 points (25-27–52) in Flint last season.

The Firebirds, who are off to an 0-3 start to the season, return to action tonight in Saginaw, taking on the in-state rival Spirit for the first time this season. The game is streaming for free as the CHL TV Game of the Week at watch.chl.ca.
