RUTLAND, VT. – The Elmira College women’s ice hockey program closed its regular season campaign on Saturday on the road with a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the Vermont State Castleton Spartans. The Spartans used a late power-play goal in the second period to break a scoreless draw between the two sides.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Soaring Eagles would be unable to convert on a power play opportunity in the first period despite recording five shots on goal with the extra skater. Castleton would also have a late opportunity in the frame with the extra skater as the period would end in a scoreless draw.
- Elmira looked to benefit from three penalties taken by the Spartans in the second period, including a 5-on-3 opportunity with less than two minutes left on the clock. Castleton tallied the first goal of the contest at the 17:20 mark of the second period with an extra skater on the ice as Moa Carlsson scored her first of two goals.
- The Spartans would beat the final buzzer in the third period to push the score to 2-0 as Carlsson added her second goal at the 19:59 mark with the net empty for the Soaring Eagles. Elmira tallied 37 shots on goal but would be unable to solve Castleton goalkeeper Kirsten Dicicco, who made 13 saves in both the first and second periods.
- Leonie-Louise Kuehberger ’25 suffered the loss after making 12 saves on 13 shots for the Soaring Eagles. The Soaring Eagles finished the contest 0-for-4 with the extra skater, while Castleton finished 1-for-3.
UP NEXT: The Soaring Eagles set their sights on the upcoming New England Hockey Conference Championships as Elmira will be the No. 2 seed and will host No. 7 seed Plymouth State on Saturday, February 17, at the Murray Athletic Center at a time to be determined.
