Canadiens: Russian Prospect Receives High Praise

In a recent article posted by RG.org, Montreal Canadiens prospect Bogdan Konyushkov received a comparison from his head coach that is above and beyond flattery.

Firstly, the captain of the Torpedo Nizhny Novogorod was asked about his offensive prowess. Specifically, what he demonstrates on the attack.

“I can still play on the powerplay and support the attack. But in the Torpedo, all the guys can do this. I’m grateful to the coaching staff and personally to Igor Larionov for not forbidding us from being creative and jumping offensively all the time. On the contrary, they encourage us to do it. Thanks to this, we, I mean our defensemen, are becoming two-way forwards.”

Konyushkov has shown impressive flashes of offensive charge. He put up 28 points in 65 games last season. While the captain showed a great deal of humility in his response, his coach went a different route.

“Bogdan is a serious young man, and I believe in his potential to reach the level of players like Mikhail Sergachev, Nikita Kucherov, Artemi Panarin, Kirill Kaprizov, Alex Ovechkin or Evgeni Malkin, as he dreams of it,” Larianov told rg.org. “I know he has the skills and the intelligence to be a valuable player for the Montreal team in the future.”

To say Larionov knows what he’s talking about is an understatement. He has a prolific hockey profile that includes over 900 games in the NHL, three Stanley Cups, eight Soviet League championships and an incredible hockey mind that garnered him the nickname The Professor.

When the Canadiens selected Konyushkov with the 110th overall pick in the 2023 draft, the words said to him from a scout was that he is “in good hands with Larionov.” He still has two years left on his contract, meaning he is slated to play with the Torpedo until 2026. If the Habs like what they see from him, (and a few spots open up on the already crowded blue line), the right-shot defender will find himself in Montreal.
