A product of Vantaa, Finland, Makiniemi spent time playing for the San Jose Barracuda and Wichita Thunder (ECHL) last season. In 18 appearances with San Jose, he posted a record of 8-8-0 to go along with a 3.14 GAA and a .900 SV%. With Wichita, he posted a 1-2-0 record, a 3.39 GAA and a .907 SV% in three appearances.
Drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes in the fourth toured of the 2017 NHL Draft, Makiniemi came to North America at the beginning of the 2021-22 season. Since then, he has played in the AHL (San Jose Barracuda & Chicago Wolves), ECHL (Wichita Thunder) and the NHL (San Jose Sharks).
In his two career NHL appearances, Makiniemi has collected a 1-0-1 record to go along with a 2.13 GAA and a .906 SV%.
As Makiniemi joins the Flyers on a PTO, he will have to prove himself if he wishes to earn a deal with the team. Although he has shown to be reliable at the AHL level, the Flyers appear to be set in net with Ivan Fedotov and Samuel Ersson. If he can play well in the pre-season, Makiniemi could very well earn parlay that into a role with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.
