Makiniemi joined the Flyers on a PTO this offseason after injuries derailed his Sharks career. At one point in time, Makiniemi was amongst the top goalie prospects in the Sharks system.

The Finnish netminder was part of the trade return from the Carolina Hurricanes in which the Sharks traded Brent Burns.
Makiniemi played two games for the Sharks in 22-23 and started one of them. He made 23 saves against the Anaheim Ducks in his only NHL career start.
In 18 games for the San Jose Barracuda last season, the netminder had eight wins, a 3.14 GAA, and a .900 save %. He also had three shutouts.
The Flyers gained goaltending depth as one of their top goalie prospects, Alexei Kolosov, did not report to training camp. Kolosov’s lack of appearance has left the Flyers and their AHL affiliate thin at goaltending.
