Auston Matthews is good at hockey.
That was the easy conclusion to draw from another Leafy victory – 4-3 in OT over the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday night at Scotiabank Arena.
Next up for Toronto is a home date with the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday night. Speaking of which, alongside Anthony Stewart, who filled in for Jay Rosehill, we kicked off the Friday edition of Leafs Morning Take by spending some time with Ducks forward Adam Henrique. The 34-year-old Burford native, who likely will be on the move in the next three weeks, has been loosely linked to the Leafs in recent weeks. For now, he’s just trying to focus on how to shut down Auston Matthews. That interview was brought to you by BATL Axe.
After that, we discussed Morgan Rielly’s suspension appeal. Furthermore, Anthony disclosed that it was actually Brendan Shanahan that requested the in-person meeting with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman. Go figure.
Presented by Door Dash, The Appetizer focused on the meat and potatoes of Toronto’s OT win against Philadelphia. Firstly, Auston Matthews is not human. Papi notched his fifth hat-trick of the season and is now just five goals shy of yet another 50-goal campaign. We also discussed the Leafs blowing another third period two goal lead, and how once again, they took the foot of the pedal. Yes, killer instinct was spoken about yet again.
Meantime, courtesy Charm Diamond Centres, we discussed whether it’s time for the Leafs to give Tyler Bertuzzi a rest. The 28-year-old is currently riding a nasty 19-game goalless drought and has potted just one goal in his past 30 outings. He played a season-low 10:55 on Thursday night.
Lastly, thanks to the Wendy’s Daily Faceoff Survivor, we previewed Saturday night’s tilt between the Leafs and Ducks. Toronto’s looking to finish off a perfect three-game homestand.
Jay Rosehill will be back in the mix for the Family Day edition of Leafs Morning Take. Join us at 11 AM ET for another jam-packed show. We’ll recap Leafs/Ducks and preview Leafs/Blues. Additionally, former Minnesota Wild head coach Dean Evason will drop by for a chat.
