Andrej Sekera formally announced his retirement at the age of 36 on Monday, wrapping up an NHL career that spanned parts of 16 seasons.
A product of Bojnice, Slovakia, Sekera was the second overall pick of the 2004 CHL Import Draft and played two seasons in Owen Sound from 2004-06, accumulating 28 goals, 55 assists and 83 points over 103 regular season games for the Attack. He won the Max Kaminsky Trophy as the OHL’s Defenceman of the Year in 2006, being named a First Team All-Star.
A third round pick of the Buffalo Sabres in the 2004 NHL Draft, Sekera would play 842 career NHL regular season games between Buffalo, Carolina, Los Angeles, Edmonton and Dallas, suiting up in 32 this past season. He collected 51 goals, 202 assists and 253 points in his career while also representing Slovakia on the world stage numerous times. Sekera and the Dallas Stars reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2020, falling short against the Tampa Bay Lightning. He played in 46 career playoff games, recording five points (2-3–5) in the process.
