Auston Matthews has been named the NHL’s second star of the week

by

The NHL has named Auston Matthews as the second star of the week from the week ending on March 24th.

He had a solid week from an offensive standpoint as he posted 10 points (three goals and seven assists) in only four games played. This marks the sixth time this season that he has been named one of the three stars of the week and the first where he recorded more assists than goals on a week he garnered the distinction. All of that while without Mitch Marner who continues to recover from a high-ankle sprain.

Matthews edged out Connor McDavid of the Oilers who recorded 10 assists and 11 points while trailing only Alex Ovechkin who turned back the clock with a flurry of goals to get him back on track to catch Wayne Gretzky for the all-time goals scoring record. That is some solid company for the American forward to find himself in that is for sure.

This is yet another badge on the belt for what has been a solid campaign for Matthews. He currently leads the NHL in goals by eight, is two away from hitting 60 for the second time in his career, and is on pace for his second-ever 100-point campaign. His 92 points (58 goals and 34 assists) in 69 games played have him second on the Leafs in scoring and only one point behind William Nylander for the team lead.

He has constantly proven to be the most talented player the Leafs have ever had in their franchise history and this latest distinction is further proof of just how fortunate the team is to have him on their side. Matthews is only a deep playoff run away from cementing his place as the best to ever don the Blue and White.

Who knows how much higher he can climb up the charts in terms of scoring this year, but this latest accolade is yet another reminder that the Leafs will only be able to go as far as he can take them. And it is safe to assume Matthews still has plenty left in the tank to provide for this ongoing campaign.
