ELMIRA, N.Y. — Softball pitcher Ally Barr ’21 and men’s ice hockey goaltender Chris Janzen ’21 were named Elmira College Athletes of the Week for the week ending April 4.

Barr made three appearances in the pitcher’s circle for the Soaring Eagles and earned both of EC’s victories against Houghton and Keuka. She finished the week with a 1.17 ERA and held opposing batters to a mere .167 batting average. In 18.0 total innings, Barr struck out 10 and walked only three.

Elmira’s run to the 2021 United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) Championship was fueled by Janzen’s phenomenal work in goal. In the first two rounds of the postseason tournament, the senior goalie made 93 saves with a .989 save percentage and allowed just one goal in 165:46.

In the UCHC quarterfinals, the Pelham, Ontario, product needed 31 saves for his third shutout of the season in a 6-0 win over the Cougars from Chatham. On April 2, the senior put on one of the finest goalkeeping displays in recent history. Janzen made a career-high 62 saves in the fourth-longest men’s ice hockey game in NCAA history, which lasted 105:46 in triple overtime. He had double-digit saves every period except the third overtime, leading the Soaring Eagles to a 2-1 upset over No. 1-seeded Utica in the semis.

The 2021 UCHC title game takes place on Monday, April 5, when fourth-seeded Elmira visits the No. 2 seed, Stevenson University, at the Reisterstown Sportsplex. The Soaring Eagles and Mustangs drop the puck at 4:00 p.m.
