When the New Jersey Devils and Vancouver Canucks draw battle on Tuesday night, it’ll be the first time that the Hughes brothers − Jack, Quinn and Luke − share the ice together in the National Hockey League.
Tuesday’s 10 p.m. game in Vancouver will be just the ninth time in NHL history that three brothers will all play in the same game. The last occurrence was this past April when the Staal brothers (Eric, Marc and Jordan) were all featured in the same matchup when the Florida Panthers and Carolina Hurricanes faced off in Florida.
Both Jack and Quinn are off to great starts in the 2023-24 season. As of Monday, they each rank in the top-10 in the NHL in points as we’re nearly two months into the regular season.
Quinn is tied for the most points among defensemen (34 points), while Jack has a whopping 30 points despite playing in just 17 games so far this season.
Luke is playing in his first full NHL season and is already to starting to make an impact for the Devils. The 20-year-old scored his first career game-winning goal last Thursday night against the Philadelphia Flyers in a 4-3 victory at Wells Fargo Center.
All three Hughes brothers were top seven picks in their respective drafts. Most notably, the Devils selected Jack with the No. 1 overall pick in 2019. Two years later, the organization took Luke, the youngest brother (20), fourth overall in the 2021 NHL Draft.
The Canucks drafted Quinn with the seventh overall pick in 2018 and named him the 15th captain in team history prior to the start of the 2023-24 season.
Tuesday’s game is the first of two meetings between the Devils and Canucks. The rematch between the three Hughes brothers will be at Prudential Center on Jan. 6.
