For the second time in a month, the rest of the NHL has an opportunity to claim Boston Bruins defenseman Mike Reilly off waivers.

The team announced Wednesday afternoon that Reilly is on waivers for the purpose of AHL assignment. The move came a few hours after defenseman Charlie McAvoy skated on the first pairing next to Hampus Lindholm at practice.

Neither McAvoy nor Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery confirmed that the superstar d-man will make his season debut Thursday night when the Calgary Flames come to TD Garden, but all signs are pointing to a return in the very near future.

McAvoy had shoulder surgery in the offseason. If he’s ready to play soon, the Bruins will need to make room for him on the roster. Reilly, who has tallied zero goals and one assist in 10 games this season, appears to be the odd man out.

When the blue line is fully healthy with McAvoy and the injured Derek Forbort back in the fold, another move (a trade, most likely) will have to be made for the Bruins to be salary cap compliant.

The Bruins lead the Eastern Conference with a 11-2-0 record.
