Montreal Canadiens forward Cole Caufield has scored in each of the team’s first three games in 2024-25. By achieving this feat, he became the first player since Tomáš Plekanec in 2014 to record a goal in three straight games to start a season.

On Monday, Caufield will look to find the back of the net for the fourth consecutive game, joining a group of Canadiens players, including three Hockey Hall of Famers.

  • Aurele Joliat (1923)

  • Jacques Lemaire (1975)

  • Guy Lafleur (1975)

  • Mario Tremblay (1981)

  • Marcel Hossa (2003)

If Caufield can continue this hot streak and stretch in another contest with a lamplighter on Thursday night against the Los Angeles Kings, he’d join former player and head coach Toe Blake as the only Montreal player to score in five games.

After Blake, who ranks sixth all-time, here’s a breakdown of the top five streaks for consecutive games with a goal to start a campaign, with the top mark unlikely ever to be broken.

  • Guy Lafleur (1983)

  • Newsy Lalonde (1917)

  • Steve Shutt (1981)

  • Newsy Lalonde (1918)

  • Joe Malone (1917)

Malone’s streak began on Dec. 19, 1917, with five goals in a 7-4 win over the Ottawa Senators and ended on Feb. 6, 1918, with a single goal in a 6-3 loss to the Senators.

During this stretch, the 27-year-old scored 35 goals and 37 points to help the Canadiens reach a 10-5 record with a goal differential of plus-32, scoring 85 and surrendering 53. Eventually, Montreal would lose to Toronto in the NHL Final in March. The closest anyone has gotten to Malone’s mark with 12 games is Mario Lemieux (1992) and Cy Denneny (1917).
