Timmins burst onto the scene with the Leafs and quickly became one of their best offensive options on the back end. He’s primarily settling into a 6/7D role coming in when the Leafs need some additional offense, meaning we’ll see a lot more of him at home than on the road because of the line changes, but after years of unfortunate injuries Toronto has provided Timmins the chance to get his career on track.

The Leafs locking in a bottom pairing guy at $1.1M for the next two years is huge, and having Sandin, Liljegren, Giordano, and Timmins for a combined $4.7M should have everyone doing happy little jigs in Toronto.
Conor Timmins was acquired earlier this season for Curtis Douglas. I mention this only because it is hilarious.
If we want to speculate, it is possible that the Leafs wanted to get this deal done now because they might be looking to move out a young defenseman at the trade deadline. It is also possible this is a message to Timmins that he has a future in Toronto even if a deadline move temporarily pushes him down the depth chart.
