David Pagnotta would be surprised if someone claims Ilya Samsonov: Leafs Morning Take

by

Finally, we have a development in the Ilya Samsonov saga.

On Sunday, the Leafs placed the much-maligned 26-year-old Russian netminder on waivers.

And rightfully so.

Ultimately, Brad Treliving and company had no choice. As was the case in Edmonton with Jack Campbell earlier this season, it’s gotten to a point where Samsonov has become unplayable. Plain and simple. Over his past six appearances, he’s allowed 25 goals, many of which came against bottom feeder opponents. Simply put, the writing has been on the wall for awhile now —with Friday night’s display in Columbus unequivocally being the final straw.

When it comes to the crease, there’s never a dull moment in Toronto —that’s for sure.

At any rate, I summoned NHL Insider David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period and SiriusXM NHL Network Radio for a quick hitter to discuss all the implications of Sunday’s decision.

Considering how bad he’s looked, it seems very unlikely that Samsonov will be claimed, although it takes just one team to feel brave enough to walk the plank. Furthermore, as we’ve seen in recent memory, teams love claiming Leaf players off waivers for some reason. It could be a Dubas thing, though.

If Samsonov does in fact clear, he’ll head West down the Gardiner to the Toronto Marlies for a complete mental reset.

While nothing’s been confirmed to this point, it seems like there’s a good shot Dennis Hildeby could make his NHL debut this upcoming week in California, perhaps against the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday night.

For now, we sit and wait with bated breath for 2 PM ET on New Year’s Day.

REMINDER: Leafs Morning Take will return at 11 AM ET on Tuesday, January 2nd as Nick Alberga & guest co-host Carter Hutton preview Toronto’s visit to Los Angeles.
