The Devils have signed free agent goaltender Keith Kinkaid to a one-year, two-way contract, general manager Tom Fitzgerald announced Wednesday.
This will be the 34-year-old’s second stint with the organization after spending parts of nine seasons in New Jersey between 2011 and 2019. During that time, he played 151 games and earned 64 wins, with a career-high 26 in 2017-18 en route to a Stanley Cup Playoffs appearance.
Over the past four seasons since leaving the Devils, Kinkaid has only made 14 NHL starts (18 appearances) for Colorado, Boston, the Rangers and Montreal. He has posted a .895 save percentage with a 3.02 goals-against average in 974 minutes of ice time with a 6-3-4 record.
In 27 games last season for the AHL’s Providence Bruins and Colorado Eagles, he posted a .911 save percentage with a 2.92 GAA in 1,521 minutes.
Kinkaid’s deal will be worth $775,000 at the NHL level and $350,000 at the AHL level.
The Devils used three netminders a season ago with Vitek Vanecek (48 starts), Mackenzie Blackwood (20 starts) and Akira Schmid (14 starts) splitting time between the pipes, with only Schmid (eight starts) and Vanecek (four starts) appearing during the playoffs. Blackwood was dealt to the San Jose Sharks ahead of hitting the free agent market.
