Former Oiler defenceman Tyson Barrie has won a spot with the Calgary Flames, parlaying a training camp invite to a one-year contract worth $1.25 million, per Frank Seravalli.
Barrie spent three seasons with the Oilers from 2020-21 to 2022-23, scoring 132 points in 190 games. He was traded to the Nashville Predators at the 2023 trade deadline in the deal that brought Mattias Ekholm to Edmonton.
Barrie had a rough go of things last season in Nashville, only playing in 41 games due to a combination of injuries and healthy scratches. His 15 points were his lowest total since his 32-game rookie year in 2012-13.
He was rumoured to be on his way to Calgary at last year’s deadline, a deal never materialized and he stayed in Nashville through the end of the season. His name was mentioned as a possibility for the Oilers this offseason before he signed his PTO with Calgary.
The 33-year-old notched two assists in three pre-season games with the Flames en route to earning an NHL contract. He’ll add veteran presence and offensive competence that’s sorely needed on the Flames’ blueline — The Athletic ranked the right side of Calgary’s defence 25th in the league before Barrie’s signing.

Barrie will likely quarterback the Flames’ second powerplay unit and figure into a bottom four that will include Jake Bean, Kevin Bahl, Daniil Miromanov, and Brayden Pachal.
The Oilers will get their first look at Barrie and the Flames in Edmonton on October 13th.
