Former QMJHL Star Signs in Switzerland

by admin

Former QMJHL winger Filip Zadina signed a two-year contract with HC Davos in the Swiss National League.

The club announced this news in a tweet jokingly aimed at NHL insider Kevin Weekes. Last week, he reported that Zadina was close to signing a professional tryout with one of many teams that were rumoured to be interested in his services.

Before making it to the NHL, the Czech forward made his North American debut with the Halifax Mooseheads. Zadina was selected 4th overall by the Vancouver Giants of the WHL in the 2016 CHL import draft, but didn’t report. The following CHL import draft, the Mooseheads selected him 11th overall.

In his one-year QMJHL career, Zadina put up a staggering 44 goals and 82 points in 57 regular season games with the Mooseheads, adding another five goals and 12 points in nine postseason games. Zadina’s display of talent placed him in the top five of the 2018 NHL draft, so many were surprised that the Detroit Red Wings were able to snag him with the 6th overall pick.

The winger made a jump to the AHL with the Grand Rapids Griffins straight after the draft, where he put up 16 goals and 35 points in 59 regular season games as a rookie. However, Zadina wasn’t able to find his footing with the Red Wings over the years. They ended up not qualifying him as a restricted free agent at the end of the 2022-23 season.

The San Jose Sharks took a chance and signed Zadina to a one-year contract. They didn’t re-sign him this offseason after he only put up 13 goals and 23 points in 72 games in 2023-24.

Zadina now looks for a fresh start overseas. For now, his NHL career stats remain at 41 goals and 91 points in 262 regular season games. The 24-year-old has not made an appearance in the postseason since his start in the league.
