Niagara, Ont. – The Niagara IceDogs are excited to announce that the fourth overall pick in the CHL Import Draft, Urban Podrekar has committed for the 2023-24 season.
The 18-year-old from Kranj, Slovenia skated in 24 professional games this past season with HK Olimpija Ljubljana of the ICEHL, including playing two games in the Champions Hockey League. In addition, the 6-foot, 183lb. blueliner played two games with the Slovenian Men’s National Team.
“We are proud to officially welcome Urban Podrekar to the IceDog family”, said Interim GM Wes Consorti. “Urban is a high character individual who comes from a hard-working family in Slovenia. He is very passionate about the game of hockey and is someone who holds strong core values that will help our organization on and off the ice moving forward.”
Podrekar describes himself as a two-way defenceman with a knack for jumping up in the rush and creating offence.
“It was a big jump this year playing against grown men. It has been a great experience and I have developed as a player”, stated Podrekar.
“I am eager to embark on this new chapter with the Niagara IceDogs, and I promise to give my all on the ice. This is a dream come true, and I am ready to make the most of it. Thank you everyone; especially to my parents, my brother and my mentor for being a part of my journey so far. I cannot wait to see what the future holds.” said Podrekar.
Podrekar will wear number 86 for the IceDogs.
