The chair of Hockey Canada’s board of directors, Michael Brind’Amour, announced that he has resigned from his post, effective immediately.
Brind’Amour’s term was set to complete in November.
“I have listened carefully and intently to the comments of Canadians about the culture of our sport and our organization, and about our actions and leadership. I understand that the actions we have taken in recent weeks are part of the solution,” Brind’Amour wrote in a statement.
“I know that there is no need to wait for a new era. Immediate action is essential to address the important challenges facing our organization and our sport.”
Hockey Canada’s board of directors will meet in the next few days to determine the organization’s next steps.
This comes on the heels of the sexual assault on an announcement that former Supreme Court judge Thomas Cromwell would lead an independent review of Hockey Canada’s governance.
Hockey Canada has been under fire for how the organization has handled sexual violence allegations. In May, news broke that Hockey Canada settled a lawsuit with a woman who claimed she was sexually assaulted in June 2018 by eight CHL players. Halifax police are also investigating allegations of a group sexual assault involving players from the 2003 World Junior Championship team.
