Newly signed winger Daniel Sprong is excited about joining the Vancouver Canucks organization and hopes that he can stay long-term.
Since 2019, Sprong has played for the Anaheim Ducks, Washington Capitals, Seattle Kraken, and most recently the Detroit Red Wings. Last season, Sprong played in a career-high 76 games, scoring 18 goals and 25 assists.
“I’m a scoring winger, but I know I have some things to work on, and we talked about that and how they’re going to help me,” Sporng told Canucks media on Monday. Going into camp, I think I have an idea where they see me, but I’m going to have to play the right way and produce when I get the opportunity.”
Sprong has been a productive scorer the last two seasons, scoring 18 goals in 23-24 and 21 goals in 66 games with the Kraken the previous season. Despite the recent track record of goalscoring, Sprong hasn’t found a place to sing long-term.
“I’m hoping Vancouver is not just a one-year thing,” Sprong said. “That’s something [we talked about], and I can see myself being there long term. That’s really what excited me.”
Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet won the Jack Adams Trophy last season, and Sprong told reporters that his conversations with the bench boss influenced his decision to sign.
Sprong continued to mention that playing with the Canucks core of Quinn Hughes and Elias Pettersson allows him to supply something missing from the lineup.
“It’s a great group. [You’ve got a] top three defenseman on the backend with Hughes. A top-five goalie in Thatcher Demko and just the guys around with Patterson, Miller, and Boeser had a great year last year,” Sprong said. “When I spoke to the head coach, we talked about those things and the opportunity, and that’s really what something inside excited me to go over there.”
Sprong signed a one-year contract with a cap hit of $975k. While he wants to stay in Vancouver for a long time, he must earn it on a prove-it deal.
