The 29-year-old defenseman is entering the final year of his contract and will be looking for one final pay day on a long-term deal. During the 2023-24 campaign, he suffered an upper-body injury that held him out of the lineup for three months. Before the injury, he was having his best statistical season. Things changed for him once Noah Hanifin was acquired before the trade deadline and rumours have swirled around Theodore ever since. Here’s what Friedman had to say about the situation in Vegas.
“Not yet, I have no doubt that they haven’t talked about it. I’ve been focusing on some of the other ones so I haven’t really paid attention to that one yet. The Knights really try to do their business quietly. Guys want to stay there. Hanifin wanted to go to Tampa, gets traded to Vegas and he signs. Mark Stone gets traded there, he signs. A lot of their guys sign. Logan Thompson got traded because ‘I want more of an opportunity.’ I don’t think that’s necessarily going to be a problem with Theodore. He gets plenty of opportunity there. “

The opportunities have been there for Theodore but if the playoffs were any sign, Hanifin could be taking some of those opportunities away from Theodore. Neither the Golden Knights nor Theodore have expressed any desire for change and that is why Friedman believes a deal will happen unless any unforeseen events occur.
“The Knights find ways to keep the people that they want and I think if Theodore wants to stay and the Knights want him to stay, I always assume that this is a place where people are going to stay. Now could there be a whopper of a contract out there that maybe he’s thinking about, we’ll find out but to me, people don’t generally leave the Golden Knights unless there’s an obvious reason for them to do so.”

Theodore is an Original Misfit but we’ve seen General Manager Kelly McCrimmon be fearless in letting others walk or trade them away. Theodore is the next Original Misfit to soon learn his fate with the organization.
