Stealheads’ Hardie named Cogeco OHL Player of the Week:
Overage forward James Hardie of the Mississauga Steelheads is the Cogeco OHL Player of the Week, recording two goals, eight assists and 10 points in four games along with a plus/minus rating of plus-4. Read More

Frontenacs’ Vaccari named OHL Goaltender of the Week:
Mason Vaccari of the Kingston Frontenacs is the OHL Goaltender of the Week, going 2-0 with a 1.64 goals-against average and .951 save percentage. Read more

Stan Butler to be named 10th coach in Otters franchise history:
Erie Otters general manager Dave Brown has announced that the team is set to hire longtime Ontario Hockey League head coach Stan Butler to lead the organization back into championship caliber. Butler spent 25 seasons as a head coach in the Canadian Hockey League, including 22 consecutive seasons with the Brampton/North Bay Battalion – the longest single-team-tenure to-date in OHL history. Read more

Built for pressure: 67’s Max Donoso hitting the skies:
While away from the rink during the COVID-19 pandemic, Donoso’s hockey dreams were put on pause, giving him an opportunity to think about life after hockey. Although he hopes there is still plenty of hockey ahead of him, Donoso started building his next career, beginning the process of becoming a pilot. Read more

Runco and Stewart commit to IceDogs:
The Niagara IceDogs are proud to announce the signings of blueliner Gabriel Runco and forward William Stewart. Acquired from the Peterborough Petes in September, Runco is an 18-year-old right-shot defender who has spent the 2022-23 season with the Brantford 99ers of the OJHL. An acquisition from the Flint Firebirds, Stewart is a 6-foot-3, 170Ib. right-winger who has recorded 16 points in 42 games with the Brantford 99ers this season. Cole Davis commits to Spitfires:
The Windsor Spitfires have signed forward Cole Davis to an OHL Standard Player Agreement. Davis played minor hockey with the York-Simcoe Express before being drafted by the Spitfires in the fourth round of the 2022 OHL Priority Selection. Since being drafted, Davis has been playing with the Spitfires’ GOJHL affiliate, the Lasalle Vipers. Read more

IceDogs to host Lace Up for Cancer night on Thursday:
The Niagara IceDogs are set to host their Lace Up for Cancer night on Thursday. The IceDogs will be wearing specialty jerseys in support of the Rankin Cancer Run. The specialty game-worn jerseys will be auctioned off by Luke’s Auctions in section 105 following the game with all profits going to the Run.

Battalion host Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Night on Thursday:
The North Bay Battalion are hosting Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Night at the Gardens on Thursday when the Windsor Spitfires pay a visit. The game is sponsored by the City of North Bay in support of North Bay Pride and OUTLoud North Bay.

Wolves to host Indigenous night on Friday:
The Sudbury Wolves are set to host their Indigenous night on Friday. The Wolves are partnering up with Shakagamik-Kwe Health Centre (SKHC) to unveil limited edition indigenous designed themed jersey ahead of Friday’s game in support of Indigenous Youth in Sport and Mental Wellness. The jerseys will be available to purchase through an in-house silent auction. Read more

67’s set for Pride Night on Friday:
The Ottawa 67’s will be decked out in custom designed Pride jerseys on Friday when they play host to the London Knights. The jerseys were designed by Mio Linzie, also known as @flyerswitch on Twitter. Linzie has also produced art that has graced the front of jerseys and merchandise in various leagues, including the NHL and PHF. Read more about the jersey design at ottawa67s.com

Frontenacs to host Women in Sports night on Saturday:
The Kingston Frontenacs are set to host their Women in Sports night on Saturday. The night will celebrate the accomplishments of women in sports and look to inspire the next generation of superstar athletes and leaders in our community. The Fronts are excited to have special guests, Janine Charron and Jackie Jarrell be a part of the event. Both women will take part in a ceremonial puck drop and be available for a meet and greet with fans. Read more

Otters to host Hockey Fights Cancer night on Saturday:
The Erie Otters are set to host their Hockey Fights Cancer night on Saturday. Before the game, fans are invited to fill out an “I FIGHT FOR” signs to show solidarity for those who’ve fought and those still fighting Cancer. The Erie Otters will host a special pregame ceremony to honor survivors and the memory of those lost. As the puck drops, the team will wear specialty HFC jerseys during the game night, with a post-game game-worn jersey auction to benefit the Hillman Cancer Fund at Hamot Health Foundation.

Steelheads to host Cultural Celebration on Sunday:
The Mississauga Steelheads are set to host their Cultural Celebration on Sunday. The Steelheads will be celebrating the diversity of the city through the game of hockey, with vendors, intermission performances, and more. Read more

Otters to host Sunday Family Funday on Sunday:
The Erie Otters are set to host their Sunday Family Funday on Sunday.  The first 500 kids in the arena will receive a free Popcorn & Drink. During the game around the concourse, fans will be welcome to meet-and-greet with balloon artists, face painters, and characters from Encanto. After the game, all fans (who bring proper skates & helmets) are invited to come down to the ice for an exclusive post-game skate.

Spirit to host Shocks & Saves, Pride Night this weekend:
It’s a busy weekend in Saginaw as the Spirit will host their annual Shocks & Saves game on Saturday at home to the Sarnia Sting. The annual charity game gets underway at 4:05pm before the Spirit hit the ice at 7:05pm. Sunday is Pride Night when the Spirit play host to the Barrie Colts at 5:30pm. Generals to host Retro night on Sunday:
The Oshawa Generals are set to host their Retro night on Sunday as they gear up to enjoy blasts from the past. Fans can submit their favourite retro song requests to be played at the game! Read more

 

ALUMNI NOTES:

OHL extends thoughts, well-wishes to Bob Jones:
The Ontario Hockey League is sending thoughts and well-wishes to Bob Jones along with his family and friends this week following news of his diagnosis with ALS. The Ottawa Senators released a statement sharing the difficult news of Jones’ diagnosis on Tuesday. Jones is a former Soo Greyhounds alumnus who coached more than 20 seasons in the OHL, winning back-to-back Memorial Cup as an assistant coach with the Windsor Spitfires in 2009 and 2010. Cuylle makes NHL debut:
Former Windsor Spitfires captain Will Cuylle made his NHL debut with the New York Rangers on Wednesday night, doing so in his hometown of Toronto as the Rangers fell 3-2 in overtime to the Maple Leafs. The 20-year-old saw 5:49 of ice time in the loss, throwing four hits in the process. Cuylle played three seasons in Windsor, graduating after leading the Spits to a Western Conference title last spring. Anderson plays 700th NHL game:
Former Guelph Storm netminder Craig Anderson played his 700th career NHL contest on Monday. The 42-year-old from South Barrington, IL. was a standout over three seasons in the OHL from 1998-2001 with the Storm. He holds a 2.85 goals-against average and a .912 save percentage over 700 games played with the Chicago Blackhawks, Florida Panthers, Colorado Avalanche, Ottawa Senators, Washington Capitals and Buffalo Sabres.

Former OHL Rookie of the Year Merkley dealt to Avalanche:
Ryan Merkley is the newest member of the Colorado Avalanche organization. The 22-year-old defenceman was dealt to the Avs on Wednesday along with forward Matthew Nieto in exchange for blueliner Jacob MacDonald and forward Martin Kaut. A first round pick by the Sharks in 2018, Merkley has 14 assists in 30 games with the AHL’s San Jose Barracuda this season, and has skated in 39 games with San Jose, recording six points (1-5–6). The first overall pick of the 2016 OHL Priority Selection, Merkley amassed 269 points (54-215–269) over 248 career regular season games between Guelph, Peterborough and London from 2016-20.

Two-way game has Harley flourishing with Stars:
The AHL’s Patrick Williams provides an update on the development of Mississauga Steelheads graduate Thomas Harley, a former OHL Scholastic Player of the Year and second and third team all-star during his time with the Trout. A first round pick of the Dallas Stars in 2019,  the 21-year-old Harley has 22 points (8-14–22) in 38 AHL contests with the Texas Stars this season. Harley has played in 34 career NHL contests with Dallas. Read up on his progress at theahl.com

U SPORTS Report – OHL grads help claim first FISU gold for Canada since 2013:
The U SPORTS Report keeps tabs on former OHL names doing great things in the OUA, AUS and Canada West ranks on the road to the 2023 U SPORTS University Cup. In this week’s edition eleven OHL alumni brought home a Gold medal at the 2023 FISU World University Games in Lake Placid, NY. Read more
