The Toronto Maple Leafs placed forward Max Domi on injured reserve retroactive to November 16 and have called up Nikita Grebenkin from the AHL’s Toronto Marlies.
Domi is the latest Maple Leafs forward to be placed on injured reserve, joining David Kampf and Auston Matthews. Calle Jarnkrok was placed on long-term injured reserve on Monday after undergoing groin and sports hernia surgery, Max Pacioretty was moved from IR to LTIR on Tuesday, while Ryan Reaves is suspended for the next five games.
Matthews is seeing a specialist in Munich to treat an upper-body injury that has kept him out of the lineup for the past three weeks.
Domi was clearly playing through an injury is mired in a career-worst 13-game point drought, and is still looking for his first goal of the season, with six assists in 19 games.
Grebenkin is expected to make his NHL debut Wednesday against the Vegas Golden Knights. The 21-year-old emerged as one of the training camp standouts, with head coach Craig Berube and general manager Brad Treliving impressed with his combination of size, speed and physicality. The winger has recorded four goals and 10 points in 13 games with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies this season, and could be a natural fit among the bottom-six.
Fraser Minten is also expected to make his season debut, after being called up in place of Kampf. Minten excelled during the 2023-24 training camp and made the opening night roster, playing in four NHL games before being returned to major junior. Widely considered to be one of the Maple Leafs’ top prospects, Minten overcame a high ankle sprain that he suffered in September and has made an immediate impact in the AHL, with two goals and four points in five games.
Toronto has posted a 5-1 record without Matthews this season, but it is facing its toughest test of the year with several roster regulars — Domi included — out of the lineup. It’s not under ideal circumstances, but Grebenkin and Minten will be both afforded an opportunity to make a real impact on the Maple Leafs, who have struggled to generate 5-on-5 offence and secondary scoring throughout the year.
