Enhanced League Commitment to LGBTQI+ Education and Policies

June 16, 2021 (Brooklyn, N.Y.) – The National Women’s Hockey League announced today a new community partnership with Athlete Ally, a non-profit LGBTQI+ athletic advocacy group focused on making athletic communities more inclusive and less discriminatory and helping athletes to advocate for LGBTQI+ equality, and with Chris Mosier, a transgender hall of fame triathlete, All-American duathlete, 6-time member of Team USA, and the founder of TransAthlete.com.

“The NWHL is built on a commitment to its athletes, staff, fans, and community to be a safe and inclusive environment, and we embrace our responsibility to use our platform and continue working at being leaders in this space,” said NWHL Commissioner Tyler Tumminia. “We’re grateful for the support of Athlete Ally and Chris Mosier to help us understand and improve how to effectively enact positive change and remain at the forefront of policy development.”

Anne Lieberman, Athlete Ally’s Director of Policy & Programs, and Chris Mosier have been leading transgender inclusion trainings for professional athletes, teams, and leagues, and will provide that training to NWHL staff, athletes, and executives. This training will raise individual awareness on complex issues, recognize opportunities to build inclusive policy frameworks, and respectfully administer the league’s standards. While the NWHL was the first professional league to implement a transgender policy in 2016, it’s imperative that these guidelines continue to evolve to foster greater inclusivity, and Athlete Ally and Chris Mosier are helping the league take a holistic approach to review its policy to make it more inclusive beginning in Season 7.

“Together with Chris Mosier, Athlete Ally is grateful to partner with the NWHL to cultivate spaces where every athlete — including our transgender athletes — can thrive,” said Anne Lieberman, Director of Policy and Programs at Athlete Ally.

“With education comes the power to make athletic spaces more inclusive and accessible for LGBTQI+ athletes,” said Chris Mosier. “We look forward to working with the NWHL to building a brighter future for transgender athletes who love hockey.”

Some notable Athlete Ally community partners include Adidas, Under Armour, Zwift, The National Basketball Association (NBA) and Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), PGA of America, and the Women’s Football Alliance.
