OHL Leads the Way at 2024 NHL Draft with 39 Players SelectedToronto, Ont. – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that 39 OHL players were selected in the seven rounds of the 2024 NHL Draft held at the Sphere in Las Vegas, Nevada. It marks the most OHL players chosen at the NHL Draft since 2017.
Of the 88 CHL players selected in this year’s NHL Draft, 39 were from the OHL, 34 from the WHL, and 15 from the QMJHL. The OHL had the highest number of players chosen from any league worldwide.
Oshawa Generals forward Beckett Sennecke was the first OHL draft-eligible to be picked, being selected third overall by the Anaheim Ducks in Wednesday’s first round. Saginaw Spirit blueliner Zayne Parekh followed, hearing his name called by the Calgary Flames ninth overall to become the highest-drafted player in Spirit history. The OHL continued to be recognized throughout the first round, with London Knights defenceman Sam Dickinson (11th overall, San Jose Sharks), Guelph Storm forward Jett Luchanko (13th overall, Philadelphia Flyers), Barrie Colts centreman Cole Beaudoin (24th overall, Utah Hockey Club), Windsor Spitfires winger Liam Greentree (26th overall, Los Angeles Kings), Brantford Bulldogs forward Marek Vanacker (27th overall, Chicago Blackhawks), Oshawa Generals defenceman Ben Danford (31st overall, Toronto Maple Leafs) and London Knights rookie forward Sam O’Reilly (32nd overall, Edmonton Oilers) all being selected in the top-32.
Friday’s nine first-round picks are the most by the Ontario Hockey League in the first round of the NHL Draft since nine were selected in 2016.
Saturday morning’s second round saw a total of four OHL players chosen, with Sarnia Sting defenceman Lukas Fischer (56th overall, St. Louis Blues), Owen Sound Attack netminder Carter George (57th overall, Los Angeles Kings), Kingston Frontenacs forward Jacob Battaglia (62nd overall, Calgary Flames), and Sudbury Wolves centreman Nathan Villeneuve (63rd overall, Seattle Kraken) all hearing their names called.
Nineteen of the OHL’s 20 member clubs had a player selected in 2024 led by the Brampton Steelheads with five players chosen to lead the CHL. The London Knights trailed closely with four, while the Flint Firebirds, Oshawa Generals and North Bay Battalion each followed with three players chosen. The London Knights maintained their record streak of players chosen annually since 1969 while the Ottawa 67’s extended their streak to 22 years, the Soo Greyhounds pushed theirs to 18 and the Saginaw Spirit extended their run to 17 consecutive drafts.
By position, a total of 24 OHL forwards were selected, as well as 12 defencemen and three goaltenders.
23 of the NHL’s 32 teams added at least one OHL player with the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers leading the way with four respectively. The Los Angeles Kings and Chicago Blackhawks each trailed with three.
Following the 2024 NHL Draft, a total of 2,549 OHL players have been selected since 1969, representing approximately 20% of all players chosen.
