The Edmonton Oilers are off to the third round of the Stanley Cup playoffs after winning the Battle of Alberta in five games.
Connor McDavid scored the overtime winner for the Oilers, but the game didn’t end without significant controversy.
With about five minutes to go in the third, Blake Coleman scored after the puck hit off his skate and in. After a review, the officials declared that the goal was kicked in, as opposed to being incidentally directed, and didn’t count.
Calgary had a 2-0 lead at one point, with Andrew Mangiapane scoring at 10:13 and Mikael Backlund adding one at 5:41. The Oilers tied it up with goals from Darnell Nurse and Jesse Puljujarvi at 27:40 and 29:56, respectively, before four players combined for two goals apiece for each team in just 1:11 of play late in the second.
The Oilers will play the winner of Colorado and St. Louis, with Game 5 set for Friday evening.
The Oilers advanced to the Western Conference final for the first time since 2006 when the team went on to the Stanley Cup final.
