Penguins Notebook: Glass To Injured Reserve, Hayes Week-To-Week, All Three Goalies Practice

by admin

The Penguins practiced Sunday at UPMC Sports Complex in Cranberry, and they did so with all three of their netminders present.

Rookie goaltender Joel Blomqvist got the bulk of reps at practice on one side of the ice, while Alex Nedeljkovic and Tristan Jarry – who was activated from his AHL conditioning stint on Saturday – split the net at the other end.

Jarry said he is feeling good after his 14-day stint in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Over the course of the five games he started, he went 4-1 with a 2.16 goals-against average (GAA) and a .926 save percentage (SV%), allowing 11 total goals.

“It was nice to get down there and play some games, play some games consecutively,” Jarry said. “And I thought I played pretty well.”

With three goaltenders in the mix for the time being, Jarry knows it will be a bit of a challenge to find a “rhythm.”

“Obviously, you have to find a rhythm with three goalies,” Jarry said. “That’s something that’s part of it. We have three goalies right now, so it’s something that the three of us will have to work out. And all three of us will have to find a rhythm to play well.”

Head coach Mike Sullivan mentioned that the goalie situation is something that will, more than likely, run its course naturally.

“As far as the three-goalie scenario, I think at the end of the day, that will eventually play itself out,” Sullivan said. “But in the short-term, we feel like we have three capable guys. I think Blommer’s played extremely well. I think Ned’s played solid also, and Jars obviously has a body of work here that you’re all well aware of. So, we’ll put together a game plan where we keep these guys all in the mix.”

In other news, forward Cody Glass sustained a concussion and has been placed on injured reserve. Forward Kevin Hayes, who was formerly designated as day-to-day, has been downgraded to week-to-week.

With those two on the shelf and forward Matt Nieto on a 14-day AHL conditioning stint, the Penguins currently do not have any extra forwards and will require all hands on deck. They do not have room on the roster to call up an additional forward unless Hayes is transferred to injured reserve or a goaltender is optioned.

The lines and pairings at Sunday’s practice were the same ones that the Penguins deployed during the third period in their 4-2 win against the Washington Capitals on Friday:

The Penguins go through a stretch this week where they play four games in six days, beginning Monday night when they take on the Dallas Stars at home. They follow that up with a tilt with the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday and back-to-back games against Columbus and San Jose on Friday and Saturday.
