Makiniemi, 25, spent this past season with the San Jose Sharks organization. The 2017 fourth-overall pick played the majority of the campaign with the San Jose Barracuda, recording an 8-8-0 record, a .900 save percentage (SV%), and a 3.14 goals-against average (GAA) in 18 games. He also appeared in three games for the Wichita Thunder of the ECHL, posting a .907 SV%.
Bringing in Makiniemi on a PTO now gives the Flyers another potential minor-league option between the pipes to consider. At this juncture, Cal Petersen, Parker Gahagen, and Keith Petruzzelli are all in the running for AHL jobs with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Makiniemi now adds more competition.
Overall, there is no harm in the Flyers taking a chance on Makiniemi with this PTO. It will be fascinating to see if he impresses at training camp and can earn a contract with the organization.
In two career NHL games, Makiniemi has a 1-0-1 record, a 2.13 GAA, and a .906 SV%.
