The Nashville Predators needed a response after Tuesday’s 6-1 home loss to Edmonton.
They got it, led by an unexpected source for goals.
Cole Smith, who had four career goals in 82 NHL games coming into Thursday, scored two first-period goals, and Nashville controlled play throughout against the New York Rangers on its way to a 4-1 win inside of Madison Square Garden.
Smith got his goals in two different ways, a scrappy goal on a goal-mouth battle and a breakaway shot that beat Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin. Ryan O’Reilly and Filip Forsberg added power play goals in the second for the Predators (2-3-0). Adam Fox’s 5-on-3 power play goal late in the second period was the only mark on the scoresheet for the Rangers (2-2-0).
The only negative news coming from Thursday’s win was Cody Glass, who played 1 minute, 46 seconds in the first period before leaving the game and not returning. The Predators said Glass was out with a lower-body injury.

Rangers goal waved off midway through third
The New York Rangers appeared to cut the Nashville lead to 4-2, but the play is ruled offside. Wipes away Vincent Trocheck’s bouncing goal. Predators still lead 4-1 with eight minutes left.
Cody Glass out with a lower-body injury
Predators forward Cody Glass is out for the rest of Thursday’s game with a lower-body injury, the team says.
Second period
Adam Fox gets NY Rangers on the board on a 5-on-3 power play
Adam Fox gets a goal on a deflected shot that gets through Saros in the final minute of the second period. Predators took quick consecutive penalties to give the Rangers a 5-on-3 power play.

Filip Forsberg sniper goal pushes Preds lead to 4-0
The Nashville Predators got the message after Tuesday’s loss. Filip Forsberg is finally on the scoreboard with his first goal of the season, a slap shot from the corner on the power play. He has a goal and an assist tonight. Very good start to the season for the Preds’ top forward.
Predators 4, Rangers 0
Jonathan Quick in for Shesterkin.
Cody Glass out since early in the first period
Cody Glass has played just 1:20 of game time and hasn’t played since about 13 minutes left in the first period. He’s currently not on the bench. No update yet.
Ryan O’Reilly power-play goal gives Nashville a 3-0 lead
The Predators go to work on an early second period power play and score quickly. Ryan O’Reilly gets into a good spot in front of Shesterkin to bury the thread of passes from Evangelista and Filip Forsberg for the goal. Really well done on the power play by the Predators.
Predators 3, Rangers 0
First period
Cole Smith breakaway goal makes it 2-0 Preds
A NYR bad turnover at the wrong time at the end of the Rangers power play gives the penalty box-exiting Cole Smith a breakaway chance. He beats Shesterkin glove-side at 16:22 of the first period. Smith is already halfway to last year’s goal total (4).
Predators 2, Rangers 0
That followed an excellent PK by the Predators.
Cole Smith’s scrappy goal starts the scoring
Cole Smith has his first goal of the season, getting to a Tyson Barrie rebound that leaked behind Igor Shesterkin before anyone else and flipping the puck into the net. Smith himself ended up in the net after diving over Shesterkin after the puck crossed the goal line at 11:24 of the first period.
