The NHL Network recently released its “Top 20 Centers Right Now” list. Unfortunately, it was a tough list for the Buffalo Sabres, as none of their players made the cut. This notably includes star center Tage Thompson.

Thompson, 26, is undoubtedly an elite talent, but his struggles last season likely played a role in him failing to make the list. In 71 games for the Sabres during the 2023-24 campaign, he had 29 goals, 27 assists, and 56 points, his lowest offensive totals since the 2021-22 season.
While it was a down year for Thompson, he still had a clear case to deserve a spot on the NHL Network’s list. Just back in 2022-23 with the Sabres, he was easily one of the NHL’s best centers, posting 47 goals and 94 points in 78 games. This was after he had 38 goals and 68 points in 78 contests for the Sabres in 2021-22.
Given Thompson’s excellent offensive seasons, there is reason to believe he can bounce back for the Sabres in 2024-25. If he does, it will certainly make his omission from this list even more notable.
Alas, it will be fascinating to see what kind of year Thompson puts together in 2024-25 from here.
