ELMIRA, N.Y. — The Elmira College Department of Athletics announced that longtime head men’s ice hockey coach, Aaron Saul ’98, has been promoted to Assistant Athletic Director.
In addition to his duties as coach of the historic men’s ice hockey program, Saul â the only Elmira alumnus to serve as head coach of the Soaring Eagles in College history â will add external operations to his responsibilities. In addition to assisting with the Athletics Hall of Fame, Athletics Alumni Weekend, Booster Club, and the Purple and Gold Golf Outing, Saul will aid in the department’s fundraising efforts and some game management duties.
“Aaron has developed hundreds of positive relationships with the community and alums that we can utilize to get people excited about EC athletics,” said Rhonda Faunce, who begins her term as the College’s Interim Director of Athletics starting on Monday, June 14. “I have no doubt his great energy, infectious personality, and championship mentality will help us do great things moving forward.”
Saul, the reigning United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) Coach of the Year, completed his 12th season behind the bench with the Soaring Eagles in 2021. Under his tutelage, Elmira has won three conference tournaments, three regular-season titles, and made three appearances in the NCAA Tournament. He ranks second all-time in program history with 164 coaching wins.
Despite the hurdles of playing under COVID regulations, Saul’s team ended the 2021 season on a magical run. That included a pair of upsets on the road over the No. 1 and 2 seeds in the UCHC Championship, before hoisting the 2021 Pat Thompson Trophy, the team’s first league championship since 2014.
