The Stanley Cup made an unscheduled stop Monday night, just a day after the Colorado Avalanche defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 6 of the Final.
According to FOX31 Denver, a car pulled into Dmitri Rudenko and his husband Kit Karbler’s driveway in Denver, and inside the car’s trunk was the Stanley Cup. The delivery was intended for their neighbor, Colorado Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog.
“I couldn’t believe it! All my thoughts were wide open because how could that be? Because I knew that we had Avalanche players that lived in the neighborhood but I didn’t know how close and specific and to get the wrong address would be easy for them,” Karbler said.
The Stanley Cup holders were friendly and allowed Rudenko and Karbler to spend a few minutes with the prestigious trophy. Karbler even got the chance to pick it up and felt like he was touching a piece of history.
“He opened it up all the way, said go ahead. I lifted it up. I couldn’t believe how heavy it was. I ran my fingers over the engraving,” Karbler said.
Philip Pritchard, Hockey Hall of Fame’s keeper of the Cup, was interviewed by FOX31 on Wednesday and confirmed the mix-up.
“We stopped there, we couldn’t really see the number of the house, so I said we’ll just go up and knock, what’s the worst thing, they say, ‘Hi, who are you guys?’ Sure enough, I knock, ‘Hi who are you guys?’” Pritchard said.
The couple snapped a quick photo of the trophy in its case before it got on its way to the captain’s house.
“We made sure it arrived safe,” Rudenko laughed.
After a quick detour at Rudenko and Karbler’s house, the Stanley Cup got back on track and in the hands of Landeskog, who made a stop at the Colorado Rockies game Wednesday night to show off the hardware.
Colorado was crowned Stanley Cup champions or the first time in 21 years on Sunday following a 2-1 victory over the Lightning in Tampa. The festivities will continue on Thursday at the championship parade in Denver.
