It is no secret that the Buffalo Sabres need help on the wing. Because of this, Daniel Sprong was viewed as a potential free-agent target for the Sabres. However, that thought can now be forgotten.
Sprong has signed a one-year, $975,000 contract with the Vancouver Canucks.
The Canucks were one of the clubs linked to Sprong, so it is not particularly surprising to see that he is now officially heading to Vancouver. He will now be a solid part of their top nine and give them some much-needed secondary scoring.
Sprong would have been a strong addition to the Sabres’ lineup if they had signed him. The 2015 second-round pick is coming off back-to-back solid seasons and would have given Buffalo another potential option for their middle six and power play.
Sprong appeared in 76 games this past season with the Detroit Red Wings, posting 18 goals and 43 points. He also had 21 goals and 46 points in 66 games with the Seattle Kraken in 2022-23. These numbers are pretty solid when noting that he primarily played bottom-six minutes.
Nevertheless, Sprong would have been a nice player for the Sabres to bring in, but he is now a Canuck. Some other potential free-agent options left for the Sabres include James van Riemsdyk, Tyler Johnson, and Max Pacioretty.
