Two former Ottawa Senator teammates are back in the NHL unemployment line after being released from their PTOs this week.
The Edmonton Oilers parted ways with forward Mike Hoffman on Monday. Hoffman joined the Oilers on September 18th and scored one goal and four points in four preseason games. Hoffman had 23 points in 66 games last season with the San Jose Sharks.
Hoffman is one of the few active players who suited up for Ottawa the last time they made the playoffs in 2017. The others are Erik Karlsson, Mark Stone, J.G. Pageau, and Cody Ceci.
Meanwhile, the Detroit Red Wings cut down a little on their former Senator content on Wednesday.
The Wings released forward Alex Chiasson from his professional tryout. Chiasson missed all of last season recovering from hip surgery and only played 20 games the season before. He was pretty good for Detroit in 2022-23, scoring six goals and nine points in those 20 games, which is probably why the Wings gave him a look this fall.
Chiasson is probably in the discussion for most career PTOs signed. This was the sixth of his career, but this one didn’t pan out. He was one of the six former Senators on the Detroit roster. The others are Alex DeBrincat, Vladimir Tarasenko, Cam Talbot, Tyler Motte, and Austin Watson.
Chiasson arrived in Ottawa from Dallas in the 2014 Jason Spezza deal. He played two seasons here before leaving for Calgary in a trade for defenceman Patrick Sieloff.
